Sea trials for Russian Navy upgraded Project 1155M guided missile destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov to Sea of Japan


According to information released by the Russian Press Agency TASS on July 13, 2020, the Russian Navy Pacific Fleet’s upgraded Project 1155M frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov has gone to the Sea of Japan for its running sea trials, the Russian Defense Ministry’s press office said.

“The Dalzavod Shipyard in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East has repaired the ship’s outboard fittings and hull structures and mounted new equipment. During the upgrade, the shipbuilders dismantled and reconstructed more than 20 percent of the frigate’s superstructure,” the press office said.

“The ship’s main cables were partially replaced. The ship was armed with the Kalibr [NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler] and Uran [SS-N-25 Switchblade] missile systems and advanced artillery weapons,” the press office added.

After the main propulsion system is tested at sea, the ship will moor at the Dalzavod Shipyard for commissioning work. The Marshal Shaposhnikov is planned to rejoin the Russian Navy Pacific Fleet by the end of 2020.

The Udaloy class, Russian designations Project 11551 Fregat-M is anti-submarine guided missile destroyers built for the Russian Navy, seven ships are currently in service with the Russian Navy. It has an overall length of 162.86 m, a beam of 18.99 m, and a draught of 6.2 m. The displacement of the ship is 8,320 t. The ships has a maximum speed of 29 kt and a range of 10,500 nm at 14 kt.

Project 11551 is armed with 2 x 4 KT-190 launchers (8 P-105 Moskit-M anti-ship missiles (3M82) and eight 4S-95 Kinzhal SAM system launchers with 64 9M330 air defense missiles. The ship is also armed with AK-130 130 mm naval gun and two 45 mm 21KM anti-aircraft gun. It also has two 3M87 Kortik CIWS (Close-In Weapon System) modules used to destroy anti-ship missiles, anti-radar missiles, and guided bombs.

The ship has an aft flight deck and two helicopter hangars to support the operations of two Ka-27 Helix-A ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) helicopters. The hangar doors serve as a ramp to the flight deck.
