An Anti-ship missile is a guided missile that is designed to be used against ships and large boats. Most anti-ship missiles are of the sea skimming variety, and many use a combination of inertial guidance and active radar homing. The longer-range version of anti-ship missiles is called anti-ship cruise missiles.

The Kh-35UE is and advanced version of the Kh-35E air-launched anti-ship cruise missile, the export variant of the Russian-made Kh-35. The Kh-35 missile is a subsonic weapon featuring a normal aerodynamic configuration with cruciform wings and fins and a semi-submerged air duct intake. The propulsion unit is a turbofan engine. The missile is guided to its target at the final leg of the trajectory by commands fed from the active radar homing head and the radio altimeter.

The Kh-35UE has a maximum firing range of 260 km and can fly at a maximum altitude of 10 km. A combined guidance system using an inertial system, satellite navigation and active-passive radar seeker gives the Kh-35UE better accuracy and higher jamming immunity, as well as a wider range of targets, including in an ECM environment. The new seeker has a lock-on range of 50 km (compared with 20 km for the Kh-35E). The missile has a warhead of 145 kg able to destroy vessels up to 5,000 tons.

The Kh-35UE can be launched from multiple platforms, including coastal defense missile systems and rotary aircraft, depending on the launch platform and the missile configurations. For example, the helicopter-launched version is slightly longer and heavier than the fixed-wing aircraft variant and can also be launched at lower altitudes.

The Kh-35UE has a combined guidance system using an inertial system, a GPS/GLONASS receiver for satellite navigation and the new U-502U active-passive radar seeker gives the KH-35UE better accuracy and higher jamming immunity, as well as a wider range of targets, under an ECM environment. The new seeker has a lock-on range of 50 km (compared with 20 km for the KH-35E). The Glonass receiver provides a secondary capability to attack fixed land/coastal targets. The seeker can acquire targets at sea state 6.

The Vietnamese VCM-01 anti-ship cruise missile is a local-made version of the Russian Kh-35UE which has a maximum firing range of 300 km and a warhead of 300 kg.
