Russia to Launch the First of Six Project 636 Improved Kilo Submarines for Vietnamese Navy
 
The first of six Project 636 Improved Kilo SSK submarines ordered by Vietnam will be launched at the shipyard, "Admiralty Shipyards" in St. Petersburg in August this year, a source from the defense industrial complex told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung announced the signing of a contract for the supply of six Project 636 in December 2009. The contract is reported to amount about $ 2 billion.

"The first submarine in accordance with the contract will be launched in August this year, after which it will begin a cycle of tests" - a spokesman said, adding that the ceremony will be held on August 28.

He also said that before the end of 2012 the first submarine will be transferred to the customer. The contract is expected to be completed by 2016.

Project 636 submarines have a length of 73.8 m, width of 9,9 m, submerged speed of 20 knots and maximum immersion depth of 300 m.
