The Reis-class submarines are Type 214 submarines featuring air-independent propulsion (AIP) using fuel cell technology. The boats are able to deploy heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and to lay mines.

As the Turkish Type 214 have a significant amount of Turkish indigenous systems on board, this variant of Type 214 is known as the Type 214TN (Turkish Navy).

HDW preassembles classified elements such as the fuel cells and propulsion system and will then ship them to Turkey. All electronic and weapon systems (including the C4I system) are of Turkish production.

Depending on their cruising speed, Type 214 Class Submarines can remain underwater for an average of 17 days, 13 days with AIP, and 4 days with batteries.

The Reis class submarines have a length of 68.35 m (224.2 ft), a beam of 6.30 m (20.7 ft), and a displacement of 1,850 t (1,820 long tons; 2,040 short tons).

On June 17, 2021, Greece warned Germany against selling Type 214 submarines to Turkey during a meeting between Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and German MP Nils Schmid.

Indeed for many years Greece and Turkey have had a number of territorial disputes in the Aegean Sea. The conflict is largely whether the Greek islands are allowed an Exclusive economic zone, the basis of claiming rights over the sea.
