French Logistic Support Ship Jacques Chevallier starts sea trials

During this period, several platform systems have been tested by the Temporary Consortium to prepare the next trials at sea.

The delivery of the LSS “Jacques Chevallier” to the French Navy is scheduled in 2023, four years after the signature of the LSS contract in January 2019.

Jacques Chevallier was a naval Engineer. He was a pioneer in the nuclear propulsion field for French submarines and assumed the role of “Délégué Général pour l’Armement” from 1986 until 1989.

The French Navy through OCCAR ordered four modified ships of the class to replace its Durance-class tankers to be delivered in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029. The program is known as the Bâtiment ravitailleur de forces (BRF). France officially joined the program in October 2018.

LSS is designed to operate in multiple scenarios and is characterized by a high level of flexibility; it will be capable of supporting naval joint task forces conducting Humanitarian and Disaster Relief (HADR) and civil protection missions.

The ship has a length of 194 meters, a beam of 16.3 m (53 ft 6 in), and a draft of 16.3 m (53 ft 6 in). She can reach a top speed of 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph).

Jacques Chevallier is armed with two Oto Melara-Oerlikon KBA 25 mm/80 naval guns, two LRAS SITEP MS-424, FFBNW Oto Melara 76 mm/62 Strales naval gun, and FFBNW 2 ODLS Oto Melara.
