Russia Navy's submarine Krasnoyarsk to fire Kalibr PL & Onyx missiles during trials

According to information published by Tass on August 3, 2023, the Project 885M (Yasen-M) submarine Krasnoyarsk will conduct three training-combat test launches of "Kalibr-PL" and "Onyx" missiles during state trials in August-September 2023.

The K-571 Krasnoyarsk is a Yasen-M class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine, designed and built for the Russian Navy. As the third submarine in the Yasen-M class, the Krasnoyarsk represents a significant upgrade over the original Yasen class designs.

The Krasnoyarsk, with a length of 130 meters and a beam of 13 meters, is equipped with an OK-650KPM pressurized water reactor that delivers 200 MWt to the turbines, translating to 43,000 shp. This powerful propulsion system allows the submarine to achieve speeds of up to 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph) surfaced, and 35 knots (65 km/h; 40 mph) when submerged.

The submarine's displacement varies significantly when surfaced versus submerged, measuring 8,600 tons and 13,800 tons, respectively. The Yasen-M class has been engineered to operate at impressive depths, with a safe depth of 1,475 feet (450m), a never exceed depth of 1,804 feet (580m), and a crush depth of 2,160 feet (658m).

The submarine is designed to be manned by a crew of 64, and its endurance is limited only by the crew's food and maintenance requirements.

One of the most striking features of the Yasen-M class submarines is their powerful armament. The Krasnoyarsk, like its sister vessels, is equipped with vertical launching system (VLS) silos capable of housing 32 Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles or Kalibr anti-ship, anti-submarine, and land-attack submarine-launched cruise missiles.

The Oniks and Kalibr missiles provide the Krasnoyarsk with a potent offensive capability. The Oniks is a supersonic anti-ship missile with a range of up to 600 km, while the Kalibr is a versatile system with variants capable of anti-ship, anti-submarine, and land-attack roles.

These missiles can strike both naval and ground-based targets from significant stand-off distances, thereby enhancing the operational flexibility and combat potential of the Krasnoyarsk.

In addition to these cruise missiles, the Krasnoyarsk also possesses 10 torpedo tubes (533mm) equipped with Futlyar (UGST-M) heavyweight torpedoes for close-quarters combat and Igla-M surface-to-air missiles for defense against airborne threats.
