The Sinpo-class submarine "8.24 Yongung" launched two strategic cruise missiles into the water off Kyongpho Bay in the East Sea of Korea.
The drill confirmed the reliability of the weapon system and examined the underwater-to-surface offensive operation posture of the submarine units that constitute one of the major components of the DPRK nuclear deterrent.
The two strategic cruise missiles precisely hit the preset target on the East Sea of Korea after traveling 1 500km-long eight-shaped flight orbits for 7 563s to 7 575s.
About the submarine
The Sinpo-class submarine is a type of diesel-electric submarine produced by North Korea and is the largest submarine designed and built for the Korean People's Navy.
She is estimated to have a displacement of 1,650 to 2,000 tons when submerged and a length of 68 meters. Her estimated speed is 16 knots on the surface and 10 knots when dived, with a range of 1,500 nautical miles.
The Sinpo class submarine has a crew of 30 to 50 members and can accommodate up to 70 to 80 personnel. Her armament includes the Pukkuksong-1 missile.
