The OPV 76 class is engineered for versatility, supporting a variety of maritime operations. While intended primarily for offshore patrolling duties during peacetime, these vessels are equipped to fulfill roles in maritime security and surveillance. Their adaptable design permits quick integration of sensors and weapons systems, rendering them capable assets for both defense and combat roles.

These ships, entirely constructed at Dearsan's shipyard, are tailored to meet the Nigerian Navy's unique requirements, incorporating advanced systems to ensure efficient performance. Each vessel has dimensions of 76.8 meters in length, 11 meters in width, and a draft of 2.9 meters, with a displacement of 1,100 tons and capacity for 43 crew members.

Armament on the vessels includes a Marlin 40 (40 mm) main gun, an Aselsan 30 mm MUHAFIZ remotely controlled stabilized naval gun, and a 12.7 mm STAMP remote controlled weapon station. The ships will also feature Havelsan's ADVENT combat management system and are designed to accommodate a medium-sized helicopter on the deck.

In November 2021, Dearsan Shipyard and the Nigerian Navy signed a contract valued at $80 million for the construction of two Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV 76). This agreement marked a significant step in enhancing Nigeria's maritime defense capabilities. The construction of the first vessel began in September 2022, and it was launched in October 2023.
