According to information published by Capt(N) on March 23, 2024, the submarine Volkhov, part of the Russian Pacific Fleet, conducted a test by firing a Kalibr cruise missile at a target located on the Syurkum firing range in the Khabarovsk region.

The use of Kalibr missiles has been a noteworthy aspect of Russia's military operations in the Ukrainian War, reflecting the strategic importance of such weaponry in modern conflicts.µ
Initially, the Kalibr missiles, recognized for their precision and the capability to be launched from various platforms, were employed in targeted attacks within Ukraine, including a notable strike on military barracks in Mykolaiv, which underscored their destructive potential.
As the conflict progressed, there was a marked increase in the production of Kalibr missiles by Russia. This boost in production, reported to be three- to four-fold, was interpreted as an effort by Russia to strengthen its missile capabilities amidst the ongoing war.
In the spring of 2023, a temporary reduction in missile strike activities was observed, which preceded a notable increase in May. This phase was characterized by an intensified frequency and sophistication in the deployment of missile weapons and UAVs, reflecting a strategic shift in Russia's approach to its military engagements in Ukraine.
About the submarine Volkhov
The submarine can achieve surface speeds between 11 to 17 knots and an underwater speed of 20 knots. The submarine is capable of diving to operational depths of 240 meters, with a maximum depth limit of 300 meters. It has a cruising range that allows it to operate autonomously for up to 45 days and can accommodate a crew of 52, including 12 officers.
The dimensions of the Volkhov include a surface displacement of 2,350 tons and a submerged displacement of 3,950 tons. Its overall length is 73.8 meters, with a maximum width of 9.9 meters and an average draft of 6.2 meters.
The power system comprises two diesel generators, each producing 1000 kW, which power the main electric motor of 5,500 horsepower and an additional economic cruise electric motor of 190 horsepower, along with two reserve electric motors of 102 horsepower each.
The Volkhov is equipped with six 533 mm bow torpedo tubes capable of holding 18 torpedoes or 24 mines. Its missile capabilities include four Kalibr cruise missile launchers for deploying 3M54K, 3M54K1, 3M14K, and 91R1 missiles.
The submarine also carries air defense missile systems including the Strela-3M, Igla-1, and Verba, with a capacity of 8 surface-to-air missiles, to counter aerial threats.
