Four P17A Stealth frigates, four P15B destroyers and four P75 Scorpene Class submarines are currently under construction for the Indian Ministry of Defense at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). The fourth Scorpene-class submarine being constructed by MDL for the Indian Navy was launched in May 2019. The Kalvari class is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines based on the Scorpène-class submarine being built for the Indian Navy. The Kalvari class is capable of offensive operations across the entire spectrum of naval warfare including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance. It has a length of 67.5 m (221 ft), a height of 12.3 m (40 ft), an overall beam of 6.2 m (20 ft), and a draught of 5.8 m (19 ft). It can reach a top speed of 20 kn (37 km/h) when submerged and a maximum speed of 11 kn (20 km/h) when surfaced.

The Kalvari class submarine is armed with six 533-mm torpedo tubes for a combination of 18 heavyweight wire-guided German-made Surface and Underwater Target (SUT) torpedoes and SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles or 30 mines in place of both. The submarine is also fitted with mobile C303/S anti-torpedo decoys for self-defence.

The Nilgiri-class frigate or Project 17A is a follow-on of the Project 17 Shivalik-class frigate for the Indian Navy. A total of seven ships will be built at Mazagon Dock and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd.

The INS Nilgiri Shivalik-class frigate is build based on a stealth design with a covered mooring deck and the number of antennae on the ship will be reduced by using EL/M-2248 MF-STAR AESA radar. The P17A will also feature better roll stabilization and a discreet visual profile. The weapon platform in the P17A ships is compact and armed with 32 Barak 8 and 8 BrahMos missiles.

The Nilgiri-class frigate is powered by two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines and two MAN manufactured diesel engines. She will reach a top speed of 28 knots and a range of 5,500 nautical miles at a speed of 10-15 knots.
