General Atomics to Provide EMALS for Future Ford-class aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 80)

General Atomics (GA) announced today it has been awarded the sole source production contract modification for the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) for Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier Enterprise (CVN 80). EMALS for CVN 80 is part of the definitized sole source production contract awarded to GA for the John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) currently under construction, to provide significant cost savings to the Navy over the next decade and beyond.

A keel laying and authentication ceremony for the future USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002) was held Jan. 30 at General Dynamics-Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath, Maine. The keel was authenticated by President Johnson’s daughters and ship co-sponsors, Ms. Lynda Johnson Robb and Ms. Luci Baines Johnson, by welding their initials into the keel plate.

A Royal Saudi Navy Al Madinah-class Frigate has come under attack by Houthi militia yesterday while patrolling off the Western coast of Yemen in the Red Sea. The Houthis released an edited and low quality video of the attack as well as a statement mentionning a missile attack, but the Saudi-led coalition forces confirmed in a statement that the Frigate was attacked by three suicide boats.

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division officially started fabrication of the Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) destroyer Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123) on Wednesday. The start of fabrication signifies that the first 100 tons of steel have been cut. DDG 123 is the final ship in the Flight IIA series and the last of eight "Flight IIA Technology Insertion" Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
 

Thailand Confirms Budget to Procure First of Three S26T Submarine from China

The Thai government has approved the purchase of a submarine from China for $ 380 million, Thai officials said on Wednesday. Last year, the government did not approve the sale. Upon approval from the cabinet, Thailand will order the submarine under a government-to-government deal. The total cost of the S26T submarine program which calls for three units will be USD $1.02 billion.

The future Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Hobart this morning departed the wharf at Techport Australia to commence a second round of more advanced Sea Trials off the coast of South Australia. Known as ‘Sea Acceptance Trials’ they follow the successful completion of ‘Builder Sea Trials’ in September 2016 which tested Hobart’s hull, propulsion and navigation systems.

The Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate HMS Westminster went back to sea after completing one of the longest, most comprehensive and complex revamps in the frigate’s 24-year life. More than 800 engineers, technicians and shipwrights from BAE Systems have swarmed over the ship in Portsmouth Naval Base to prepare her for the final decade of her life. The existing 996 radar and Seawolf air defence system have been replaced with the Artisan 3D radar and Sea Ceptor (also known as MBDA's CAMM).

According to Turkmen media, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the country's maritime forces based in the city of Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea coast. During this visit, MBDA's SIMBAD-RC short range naval air defence systems were spotted for the first time on at least two Turkmenistan Coast Guard patrol boat: SG 111 Arkadag and SG 113 Merdana.
 

Rolls-Royce to power new Intermarine-built high-speed vessels for Italian Navy’s Special Forces

Rolls-Royce has won a contract to supply engines and waterjets to power and propel two new high-speed vessels designed and built by Intermarine (Immsi Group) for the Italian Navy. The construction of two high-speed multi-purpose units (UNPAV) has recently begun at Intermarine’s Sarzana shipyard.

The German Navy (Deutsche Marine) released a video showing the first F125 frigate testing its main and secondary naval gun systems off the coast off Heligoland (a small German archipelago in the North Sea). Viewers can see the “Baden-Württemberg” firing the Leonardo (formerly Oto Melara) 127/64 LW - Vulcano main gun as well as the Rheinmetall Defence MLG 27 remote weapon systems.

Taiwan's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) released an animation video showing the future guided-missile destroyer project for the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy (ROC Navy) in combat. Renderings of this new project surfaced in June last year (as we reported). This new destroyer project is in line with Taiwan's new naval acquisition plan which was unveiled in late 2015. The new plan called for four new destroyers (among other vessels).

UK Minister for Defence Procurement Harriett Baldwin signed a P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) declaration with her United States counterpart, Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work to further strengthen the uniquely close defence relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.

PT PAL has launched the first of two SIGMA 10514 Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) guided-missile frigates designated for the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL). PT PAL built these ships in collaboration with Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS). The ceremony was attended by the Guests of Honour, namely the Indonesian Minister of Defense, Ryamizard Rycudu along with Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs, Rizal Ramli; ambassadors from neighboring countries; the Governor of East Java, Soekarwo and Chief of the Navy Admiral Ade Supandi.
