The Invincible class submarines have specifications that include a surfaced displacement of 2,000 tons, increasing to 2,200 tons when submerged. Their dimensions include a length of 70 meters and a beam of 6.3 meters. Their propulsion system combines diesel-electric and air-independent propulsion (AIP), supported by two 120 kW PEM fuel cells.

In terms of performance, these submarines can reach speeds of 10 knots surfaced and 20 knots submerged. They are designed for extended underwater endurance of 28 to 42 days without the need for surfacing.

Crew requirements for these submarines are set at 28 personnel. Their technological equipment includes a Combat Management System co-developed by Atlas Elektronik and ST Electronics, complemented by DSTA-developed decision support systems that analyze data to assist in operational decisions. Armaments consist of six 533 mm torpedo tubes and four 650 mm missile tubes, capable of deploying heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and naval mines

Strategic considerations

Singapore's acquisition of the Invincible-class submarines, also known as Type 218SG, is driven by several strategic needs crucial for the nation's defense and security in its maritime domain. Firstly, these submarines are tailored to operate efficiently in Singapore's specific maritime conditions, which include shallow and busy tropical waters.

Their design includes advanced Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems and a new rudder drive for better maneuverability, making them well-suited for navigation in congested sea lanes like the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea—areas that are vital for international shipping and thus for Singapore's trade-dependent economy.

The strategic rationale extends beyond mere capability enhancements. The Invincible-class submarines provide Singapore with a qualitative edge in underwater warfare, offering greater firepower and operational flexibility compared to the older Archer and Challenger-class submarines.

This upgrade is crucial in a region where maritime disputes and the presence of naval forces from major powers are commonplace. The increased payload capacity and advanced armament systems, including torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, enhance Singapore's deterrence capability, ensuring it can protect its sea lines of communication and maintain stability in its surrounding waters.
